On 21 March 2026 — the International Day of Forests — CEDAR-COM and the Presbyterian Educational Authority (PEA) of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon jointly launched the One Child, One Tree (OCOT) Initiative across 20 schools spread across the Northwest, Southwest, Center, East and Adamawa regions of Cameroon. In a single day, hundreds of children planted fruit trees on their school grounds, launching what is designed to be a sustained, scalable movement addressing environmental degradation, childhood malnutrition, and the urgent need for environmental education in Cameroonian schools.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW
The OCOT Initiative is a structured, school-based programme in which every participating student plants and personally nurtures a fruit tree throughout their school years. It is not a one-day symbolic act — it is a carefully designed intervention that integrates environmental stewardship into the daily life of schools.
Each child leaves school not only with knowledge, but with a living legacy: a fruit tree they planted and watched grow alongside them. As school grounds transform into flourishing orchards, children develop patience, biological literacy, and a deep, personal understanding of the relationship between human action and environmental health.

STRATEGIC DESIGN: WHY FRUIT TREES?
The initiative deliberately begins with fruit trees — a strategic choice grounded in immediate, tangible impact that sustains community engagement and youth motivation:
Harvested fruits supplement school meals and can be taken home to improve household nutrition.
Fruits provide essential vitamins and micronutrients that directly combat malnutrition in children.
Fruit trees are a long-term food asset — a single tree produces for decades, benefitting entire communities.
Visible, edible results motivate children to actively care for their trees and sustain engagement year-round.
Surplus harvests can be sold, generating micro-income for schools and families.

The programme is designed to expand progressively into other tree types and broader environmental protection practices in subsequent phases — building on an evidence-based foundation of community ownership and demonstrated outcomes.

LAUNCH DAY RESULTS
The inaugural launch on 21 March 2026 achieved meaningful scale across both primary and secondary education levels across five regions of Cameroon.
6 primary schools participated and  the youngest learners planted their first fruit trees, embedding environmental responsibility from the earliest years.
14 secondary and high schools participated and older students embraced tree stewardship as part of their broader educational development.

Across all 20 schools, children, teachers, and communities united around a shared act of planting. Each tree is both a tangible environmental intervention and a symbol of a child’s individual commitment to a greener, healthier tomorrow.

VISION & SCALABILITY
OCOT is built to scale. The programme launched in 20 schools is a replicable model designed for expansion across Cameroon’s educational system. Its core pillars are:
One child, one tree: Students plants a fruit tree at their school and replicate it back home as well.
Learning by doing: Hands-on environmental care extends naturally from school grounds into students’ homes and communities.
A greener tomorrow: Schools progressively become vibrant, eco-friendly spaces and green anchors for their communities.
Fighting malnutrition: Fruit trees provide sustained, accessible nutrition — reducing hunger and improving dietary diversity at school and household level.
